2026 Wisconsin Workplace Policy Conference: A Two Day Look at the Future of Work and Workplace Policy
By Jay Stephany, Legislative/Gov't Affairs Director

The Wisconsin State SHRM Council proudly hosted the 2026 Workplace Policy Conference on February 18–19 at the Madison Marriott West, bringing together HR professionals, legislative experts, and industry thought leaders for two days of learning, collaboration, and policy-focused conversation.

The conference opened with a welcome from Jay Stephany, State Government and Legislative Affairs Director and emcee for the event. The first session featured Dr. Shari Simpson, founder of HR Swagger, who led an insightful discussion on the ethical considerations surrounding the rise of artificial intelligence in HR. With more than 20 years of experience in talent and organizational development, Dr. Simpson encouraged attendees to think critically about technology’s expanding role in the workplace.

Following her session, attendees took part in an engaging Roundtable on Talent, where they explored SHRM’s Top 5 Workplace Policy Issues for 2026. Participants shared best practices and reflected on national trends emerging from Washington, D.C. and state legislatures—reinforcing the need for HR professionals to remain proactive rather than reactive.

The evening wrapped up with a lively vendor fair and reception, offering networking, refreshments, and a vendor passport challenge for a chance to win $50 Amazon gift cards. The room was filled with energy, conversation, and new connections.

Day two began with another welcome from Jay and remarks from Jeff Palkowski, State Director for Wisconsin SHRM. Jeff shared enthusiasm for the year ahead, highlighting statewide SHRM initiatives, upcoming events, and the power of volunteer leadership across Wisconsin. He then introduced keynote speaker Mike Aitken, SHRM’s Executive Vice President for Membership and Communities. A respected national leader and former VP of Government Affairs, Mike offered a forward‑looking perspective on building a proactive workforce amid continual change.

One of the most anticipated segments of the conference followed—Bob Gregg’s annual employment and legal update on behalf of long‑time Legislative Partner Boardman Clark. With decades of experience, Bob walked attendees through critical case developments, emerging legal trends, and essential compliance considerations for 2026.

Dr. Shari Simpson returned for a dynamic two‑part workshop focused on strategic workforce planning, offering high‑level strategic frameworks that attendees can apply to strengthen decision‑making across their organizations.

A highlight of this year’s conference was the debut of the SHRM Foundation Purse Pull Reveal—a fun, energizing, and impactful fundraiser supporting the SHRM Foundation. For a $75 donation, participants received a ticket tied to a sealed box containing a beautiful designer handbag. SHRM Foundation Director Kellie Dunn‑Poggemann introduced the fundraiser, sponsored generously by Seek Careers/Staffing. The purse reveal brought excitement and big smiles as all participants opened their boxes simultaneously.

The conference concluded with a powerful closing session from Jess Kent‑Johnson of The Perk, who led attendees through a conversation on accountability as a key driver of innovation and collaboration. With over 15 years of leadership and culture transformation experience, Jess delivered actionable takeaways for HR leaders focused on elevating team performance.

The 2026 Workplace Policy Conference would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners:
