Be a friend: Talk About Mental Health
By Terri Dougherty

Sharing healthy recipes, talking about great hiking trails in the area, or inviting someone to an exercise class can be easy conversations that support good physical health.

When it comes to discussions about mental health, however, it may be easy for words to get stuck in your throat.

That’s not a reason to avoid the topic, however. Mental health problems can be experienced by anyone, and it’s important to remember that discussing them is a sign of support.

Thankfully, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers some ideas for expressing concern with conversation starters such as:
  • “I’ve been worried about you. Can we talk about what you’re experiencing? If not, who are you comfortable talking to?”
  • “I care and want to listen. What do you want me to know about how you’re feeling?”
  • “It seems like you’re going through a difficult time. How can I help you find help?”
  • “Sometimes talking to someone who has dealt with a similar experience helps. Do you know anyone with similar problems you can talk to?”
  • “I’m concerned about your safety. Have you thought about harming yourself or others?”
Being a good friend is different than being a mental health professional; casual conversations can’t be expected to solve every problem. They can provide reassurance that someone cares, however, and point the person to resources such as a workplace employee assistance program, FindTreatment.gov, or the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Discussing mental health lets a person know that the topic isn’t taboo. Help is available, and sharing that information is something a good friend can do.
