Becoming a Next Generation Company!

Rebecca Ryan speaks
Thursday, October 16, 2008

Is your company a talent magnet? Do you easily find, hire and keep the best and brightest?

If you're struggling to attract and keep your future workforce, you're not alone. The demographics are against you. Look around your workplace - what's the average age of your employees? In some industries (utilities, education, health care) there are oodles of employees inches away from retirement, and frantic executives trying to figure out how to replace them.

If you're facing a 'cliff' - a point when you'll have more folks retiring than being hired to replace them, it's time to think about the future. If you're facing a future with fewer workers, you can:

  1. Import talent from other countries (nurses are imported from Indonesia);
  2. Export jobs to other countries (call centers in India);
  3. Automate (replace people with robots or computers);
  4. Keep retiring talent longer (AARP has a Best Places to Work list for its members);
  5. Eliminate some of your product and service offerings; and/or 6. Become a great place to work for the next generation.

Rebecca Ryan's presentation addresses the last option - becoming a Next Generation Company, a destination workplace for young talent.
