Thinking of taking your SHRM certification exam? Get prepped.
In today’s climate, HR roles are constantly evolving. As new legislation and regulations are passed, HR professionals need to be at the forefront of change within their organizations. “With the challenges of a global competitive economy, now more than ever businesses are relying on HR to align organizational strategy with a high-performing workforce,” says Bradley Gast, Dean of Business & Industry and Continuing Education, Northcentral Technical College.

Whether you’re new to the profession or want to develop your credentials and advance in your career, take the opportunity to expand your knowledge and establish yourself as an HR expert by
becoming SHRM Certified. With a SHRM certification, “You will be able to demonstrate to yourself and your employer that you have mastered HR competencies and can bring new ideas that drive success and increase productivity,” says Gayle Ostermann, B&I Seminar & CEU Specialist, Chippewa Valley Technical College.

To ensure your success in the certification process, Northwestern Technical College and Chippewa Valley Technical College offer preparation courses designed specifically for SHRM credential candidates. These courses utilize the SHRM Learning System, giving you access to the most comprehensive, effective and up-to-date exam preparation tools available.

“The SHRM competency-based certification model provides knowledge in eight key behavioral skills and 15 HR functional areas deemed by employers to be critical for success,” explains Gast. “Many employers give hiring preference to candidates with a SHRM credential.”

Prepare for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification exam in a traditional classroom setting, an online format or a hybrid of the two over a period of weeks or in a condensed time frame to fit any schedule and learning style.

Taught by an experienced SHRM-certified instructor, these prep courses offer:
  • A high-level review of course material
  • Interactive learning activities focused on the practical application of HR competencies and knowledge
  • An environment to learn and retain the material through open discussion, mentoring and study groups.
  • Sample assessment questions
  • Study and test-taking tips
  • A structured learning experience that keeps you on track

“We have a 100% pass rate,” Ostermann explains. “Students benefit from instructors who are very passionate, persistent with follow through and give expert advice. By exam time they feel confident in walking into the testing facility feeling prepared because of the prep class,” Ostermann adds.

Even if you are not seeking certification, a prep course is still a great option for professional development by offering you the opportunity to network with your peers, share experiences and learn from a certified instructor who provides expertise and one-on-one guidance. “Some start the prep course with no intention to take the exam; however, at mid-point of the instruction they gain courage and change their mind,” explains Ostermann.

With instructors who are experienced in all aspects of human resources, Wisconsin’s technical colleges offer expert, hands-on training that will help take your career to the next level. Plus, you may be able to take advantage of employer-funded tuition reimbursement. Check with your employer before you enroll.
