July 2017 State Director Message
Hello Wisconsin HR Professionals!

As I reflect back on the first half of 2017, I’m reminded of the many great successes we’ve experienced.  The year kicked off with the onboarding of several talented HR professionals serving both our local chapters and state council throughout Wisconsin.  We had a successful legislative conference, Day on the Hill, where participants received an update on the State of the Business in Wisconsin, an overview of important employment laws, analysis on the most recent presidential election and discussion on emerging issues and trends impacting our great State. In addition, participants had an opportunity to network and meet with their legislators.  In March, we held our annual Student HR Conference and HR Games at Blackhawk Technical College in Janesville.  Students both demonstrated and expanded their HR knowledge at this two-day event. Thank you to our hosting school and volunteers for making this event a great learning and networking experience for the next generation of HR practitioners.

As a council, we are continuing to make progress on our state council strategies, which are:
  • Establish Internal Branding/Membership Initiatives
  • Ensure Volunteer Sustainability
  • Grow External Partners
  • Digital Strategy
  • Fiscal Sustainability
Thank you to our members for moving the organization forward.

As we prepare for the second half of 2017, there will be more HR opportunities for leadership, learning and networking. Our WI SHRM Leadership Conference will be held August 10-11 for local chapter and state council volunteer leaders.  We will also be recognizing the When Work Works Community award winners from Wisconsin at our luncheon.

The state conference planning committee has been working diligently to put on another great conference "HR's Got Talent", October 11-13 at the Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells. As one of our largest events of the year, this is a great opportunity for growing your network advancing your skills and connecting with sponsor and exhibitors offering business solutions to take back to your organization.  If you haven't signed up, I encourage you to do so at 2017 WI SHRM State Conference and don't forget to reserve your room!  At the conference we will announce our annual Diversity, Inclusion and Workflex award winners. Don’t miss your opportunity to submit your nomination by the July 7 deadline.

Lastly, we are beginning to recruit for volunteer state council leadership positions. We have a Communication/Social Media Director position for 2017/18 and five positions for 2018:
  • State Director-Elect
  • Foundation Director
  • District Director - Northwest
  • District Director - Southeast
  • Workforce Readiness Director
The state council serves approximately 6,000 SHRM members throughout Wisconsin including 19 chapters and 15 student chapters. We LEAD through: leadership, education, advocacy and development. Being on the state council has a number of great benefits, including free conference attendance throughout the year and networking both within and outside of our state.  It is a great way to enhance your skills and your career.  You have an opportunity meet wonderful peers through these networks and forge life-long friendships!  See more details on all of the volunteer council positions on our website.  In addition, our chapters throughout the state will also be looking for additional volunteer leaders.  What better way to grow yourself and give back to our profession!  Come join us!
