Certification February 2016 Update
SHRM Certification Exams

The SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams are based on the SHRM BoCK and its two major aspects of modern HR practice, competencies and knowledge. The exams contain two types of questions:

Knowledge Items, which cover the four Knowledge Domains (People, Organization, Workplace, and Strategy) associated with the SHRM BoCK’s Technical Knowledge competency. Knowledge items assess candidates' understanding of factual information.

Situational Judgment Items, assesses the candidate's judgment and decision-making skills associated with situations calling for proficiency in the behavioral competencies.

Breakdown of Testing-Time:
  • Introduction & Instructions: 12 minutes
  • Exam Questions: 3 hours and 40 minutes
  • Survey: 8 minutes
Candidate Performance Report
SHRM has introduced a new developmental and strategic tool, the Candidate Performance Report.  Examinees may access their individual reports on the SHRM Certification Portal, under the "Results" tab.

The new reports offer valuable information, previously unavailable to test-takers, about their actual scores, specific areas for improvement, and resources for further study. All examinees, successful or not, will benefit from such enhanced performance insights. Those who passed will be able to continue building their competencies, and those who missed the mark will have a guide to help them plot their retesting strategies.

1)  Score: The examinee's individual score, ranging from 120 to 200, is the most important item provided. Unsuccessful examinees will now have a precise scoring scale (see below) by which to measure just how far they were from attaining their SHRM credential. (Passing candidates automatically receive a score of 200.)

2)  Developmental feedback: Knowing the areas in which you scored best and worst on the exam helps you maintain your proficiencies in the former, and work to become more proficient in the latter. The new report gives examinees specific feedback on their individual performance in each of the five knowledge domains—People, Organizations, Workplace, Strategy, and Behaviors—relative to a correlated passing score (see below). Where you performed well, the domain is noted as an "area of strength." Where you performed poorly, the domain is noted as an "area to improve." Each data point shows exactly how close—or far—you were from achieving a perfect score in each domain.

3)  Resources: Additional tools for building proficiency ensure a successful development journey. Your individual report provides information on how to take advantage of SHRM Certification resources, including websites, handbooks, Learning Systems, community groups, and more. The SHRM Certification LinkedIn Group, in particular, offers a forum in which to share your experiences with SHRM and other SHRM credential holders.
