Blackhawk SHRM
Twenty BHRA members came together to coordinate and facilitate our event supporting Wisconsin SHRM initiative called “One Day to Make a Difference”.
Service:
BHRA partnered with Rock County Job Center and provided a day of support to the growing needs of our Rock County job seekers.
Goal:
To better support those job seekers that had successfully
completed basic level resume and interview assistance
through the Job Center.
Publicity:
Publicized to the membership population of BHRA utilizing
our broadcast email tool, newsletter, membership
meetings and telephone calls. Rock County Job Center
made this event public utilizing Job Center resources.
Secetary Roberta Gassman was made aware of the
event during her visit to the Job Center that day
with Ed Montgomery, President Obama's Automotive
Recovery Director Secretary. The local press also
was present that day.
Recipients:
Approximately 50 job seekers attended the event.
Benefit:
Job seekers took full advantage of the opportunity
the panel discussion help. They asked questions ranging
from “What type of follow up do you expect
from me after I fill out an application?” to “Why
don’t I always hear from the company when I
send them my resume?” Immediately, following
the panel discussion attendees were allowed the opportunity
to participate in a mock interview session with other
BHRA member volunteers.
Benefit to the HR Profession and Members:
The BHRA volunteers gained a renewed perspective
on what job seekers are experiencing in today’s
environment. This perspective is valuable to the
hiring practices they each take when acquiring talent
to their workforce. Collectively the attendees agreed
that the greatest frustration they have while conducting
a job search is not receiving any type of response
on the applications they complete or resumes they
submit to company website job postings.

GMA SHRM
Service:
Our volunteers served in three local food banks, and each of them had a different service they provided. Some helped individuals to “shop” in the pantry and carry groceries to their car, some sorted through food and re-packaged it for local food pantries, and others served food.
Goal:
To make a difference in the community while providing an activity for members to get to know each other in a different way.
Recipients:
People in the community who are in need of food.
Effectiveness:
The efforts were much appreciated by all of the pantries and the direct recipients.
Link to Strategic Plan:
As we have evolved as a chapter, GMA SHRM has built a strong financial foundation and are continually working to serve our members needs. To expand on that solid foundation, we have identified the opportunity to become more active in the community. GMA SHRM wants to be seen as an HR leader in the local community and also as an organization that makes a difference in the community. We do a lot of volunteer work through our Workforce Readiness committee (partnering with the job centers and vocational rehabilitation department), but also want to reach out to the broader community. GMA SHRM has been growing our Philanthropic Committee and philanthropic efforts, and identified the Day to Make a Difference as a good way to build that area of our chapter. The Philanthropic Committee had identified the Second Harvest Food Bank of Wisconsin as the recipient of our annual Golf Outing proceeds, so we aligned the Day to Make a Difference effort to support our local food banks in order to build even greater awareness around those who are in need of basic necessities, such as food.
Benefit to the HR Profession and Members:
The benefit to our members is captured in the newsletter article & testimonials (following).

- Mock Interviews
- Youth Trends
- “Job Readiness” - Communication Skills, Customer Service Fundamentals
Publicity:
The event was promoted to high school guidance
counselors and in the community.
Recipients:
More than 60 volunteers and 150 students.
Effectiveness:
Many of the students were unfamiliar with a lot
of the table topics. They seemed excited to get
started using the new skills they had
learned.
Response:
Mid-way through the event, volunteers were so enthusiastic
they were talking about similar events for the future.
Students, most of whom had goals but no clear path
for reaching them, were eager to put what they learned
to use.
